Korver was born on May 7th at Davis Hospital. Shortly after he was born his blood sugar crashed and he was placed in the NICU where they monitored him for 6 days before he was released to go home.
We went to see Dr. Menon on Aug. 8th and Korver was given an EKG and Echocardiogram. After reviewing the test we were told that Korver had two holes in his heart.
The first is called an Arterial Septal Defect (ASD) and it is a minor hole that will most likely close on its own.
The Second is a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and that it was a very large hole at 7-8mm compared to the size of his heart.
We were told that because of the two holes, the Oxygen rich and Oxygen depleted blood were allowed to mix causing the heart and lungs to have to work overtime. This was burning most of the calories that he was consuming and not allowing his body to grow like it should.
As a result he will need to have Open Heart Surgery where they will sew in a gortex patch that will serve a barrier until the tissue of the heart grows over it.
His Surgery is scheduled for Monday Sept 8th.
After his surgery he will need to stay in the Hospital for 7-10 days.
The doctors have told us that it is a very "routine" procedure for them and that there is very little chance for any complications.
We want to thank all of you who have sent cards and well wishes and ask that you keep Korver in your Prayers on the day of and weeks following his surgery. We will try to keep our blog updated on his Progress.
